ABOUT
Hello! I'm Cody David Bauer, a curator, artist, and passionate lover of all things vintage. Based in Kalispell, Montana, my journey as an artist began in the vibrant art scene of Austin, Texas in 2014. Over the years, I’ve worn many hats – from curating collections of vintage clothing, home decor, and art, to creating my own pieces that reflect my love for color, texture, and storytelling.
My work is heavily inspired by my experiences living in two of the most unique art hubs in the United States – Austin and Marfa, Texas. Austin ignited my artistic spirit, and it was there that I first developed my signature Mosaic Dot Series, a series of intricate dot paintings on canvas. It was in Marfa, known for its minimalist art scene, where my practice deepened, and my work evolved in new directions. The town’s connection to the avant-garde, especially its history with figures like Donald Judd, has profoundly influenced my approach to form and space.
I draw inspiration from artists like Pedro Friedeberg, Donald Judd, and Damien Hirst, each of whom has impacted my love for geometry, color theory, and pushing boundaries in art. Alongside my painting, I am also an avid seed beader, using the intricate art form to create wearable pieces that are both meditative and expressive.
Coyote: A Store for Art and Style
In 2022, I returned to my roots in Montana and opened Coyote, a store located in the heart of Columbia Falls. Coyote is a reflection of my love for local craftsmanship, art, and the beauty of vintage finds. The store carries a curated selection of vintage clothing, local jewelry, one-of-a-kind pieces of art, and unique home decor. I also feature candles, cards, and lighting, adding a cozy, personal touch to your space.
In addition to these timeless pieces, I offer Montana souvenir t-shirts as well as art-themed t-shirts on my websiite coyotemodern.com—perfect for anyone looking to take a little piece of Montana and its art culture home.
The name Coyote holds a special place in my heart, inspired by the nickname my nieces and nephews gave me when they were younger: Uncle Coyote. There's something about the sound of "Cody Coyote" that feels just right, and it perfectly encapsulates the spirit of my store—approachable, bold, and full of life.
Before opening Coyote, I owned two stores in Marfa, where I honed my passion for curating and creating an environment where art, fashion, and community come together. With Coyote, I hope to offer a similar sense of connection and creativity to my new Montana community.
I invite you to visit Coyote, whether online or in person, and explore the treasures I’ve gathered from my journey as an artist, curator, and lover of all things beautiful. Thank you for being part of this adventure!
